If you are writing to your sponsored child for the first time, here are some suggestions as to what you might like to include:
Write about yourself and your family, your pets, the sports and hobbies you enjoy
Tell them about life in Australia, eg, the different animals and birds, what the weather is usually like
Ask them about their new school, and their interests, what they enjoy doing outside school hours
Be sensitive about material things. Remember in some instances your child does not have a pair of shoes, running water or a warm house to live in
Keep your sentences short, your message simple – your letter will probably have to be translated. Printing is easier to read than some freehand writing
Do not raise their hopes by promising you will visit them
What else to include:
Send some photos, preferably showing you with your family, outdoors or doing a simple activity. Dress conservatively in day to day clothes
Draw something for them – or have your children or a little neighbourhood friend draw a picture
Include a postcard showing Australian animals, like the koala or kangaroo or perhaps some little sticker
Send a map of your country and mark where you live
How to send your Letters
At the top of the letter or card write your sponsored child’s name and ID number, and your name and LFF number
